Summer Internship:26th May ∼ 25th July 2008
During my eight-week internship at TBMS I gained a tremendous amount of insight into the medical device industry and what it’s like to work in a corporate environment overseas. I shadowed salespeople and clinical specialists in four departments: Johnson & Johnson neurosurgery, Philips ultrasound, Draeger ventilation systems and Biolase laser dentistry. In every department, I accompanied salespeople and clinical specialists to hospitals and watched them interact with hospital administration, doctors, nurses and engineers. I became familiar with modern medical technology and the processes of acquiring and selling the devices. My supervisors made it so that I could observe every step in the post-manufacture life-cycle of a medical device; from ordering the device from the factory all the way to technical support after it had been in use. I was even granted the opportunity to watch the actual implantation and use of devices during surgery.
Being able to experience four different departments was particularly valuable to me because I got to see and compare how the nature of the products influenced the sales strategies, the consumer audience and the technical support provided after purchase. I particularly enjoyed my time working with the Biolase water laser because the technology is especially fascinating to me.
At TBMS I was immersed in a positive corporate culture and grasped the qualities that employees of any successful corporation must possess. I observed teamwork, leadership, superb communication, creativity and strategic thinking being applied in every aspect of their work. Everyone who I interacted with provided me with the environment and the tools to absorb as much as possible. Because of everyone’s patience and willingness to help me learn, I had the most fulfilling summer. Not only do I now have a better idea of what I would like to do in the future, but I have also gained valuable connections and essential skills necessary to be a part of any professional organization. I would like to thank everyone at TBMS for all the effort they put into making this internship such a priceless learning experience.
